Tugford

St Catherine

SY7 9HS    P on road with access across the old village green, a privately owned field, SEE BELOW.

Open daylight hours

This lovely simple and unspoilt village church is grade 11* listed and lies in the Corvedale at the foot of Clee Hill. It is mainly Norman, while the tower is Early English, (c13th century). Inside the south doorway are two sheela na gigs and there are unusual tomb-recesses outside the church, one on the south side, two on the north.

There is a west gallery, the front of which is panelled with tracery, probably from the former rood screen.

The 13th century font has fourteen sides. The bells, restored in 2006, date back to 1635.

Chris Stafford, with thanks.

St Catherine's can be difficult to find. In the centre of the village, there is a junction with 4 lanes. At the junction there is a sign post, a post box and a notice board. Next to the notice board there is a gate marked 'St Catherine's Church'. Go through the gate and across the field, the church is in the next field. Well worth a visit.
